Kande- Batate Chi Bhaaji

Onion-Potato Vegetable


4-5 tbsp oil

1 tsp cumin seeds

1/2 tsp asafoetida

250 gm onions, peeled and cut long

250 gm potatoes, peeled and cut long

2 tbsp black masala

1 tsp chilli powder

SaIt to taste

3-4 tbsp dried coconut, grated

1 tbsp jaggery, chopped

1 tbsp tamarind pulp

To Garnish

Finely-chopped coriander


1. Heat oil in a thick and broad vessel, add cumin seeds and asafoetida. When seeds begin to splutter, add onions and fry for two minutes.

2. Add potatoes, black masala, chilli powder and salt. Cover the vessel with a deep lid, add water on top and cook vegetables on low heat. Stir from time to time.

3. When vegetables are soft, add coconut, jaggery and tamarind pulp. Cook for another five minutes. Garnish with coriander and serve hot with bhakri.
